Jacob Bright died at midnight on 7/8 November 1899 at his residence, "Nunn's Acre", Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
As a result of the intervention of Jacob Bright, the MP for Manchester, the terms of incorporation laid down that “young persons” not just “young men” would be entitled to admission to the College.

He was elected as a member of the first Manchester School Board in 1870, and in 1874 as one of three members of parliament for the Parliamentary Borough of Manchester, defeating the Liberal MP, Jacob Bright.
