As Huis Sorgvliet it was built on the site of a former farm (probably part of the living quarters was worked in the left wing) by Jacob Cats (1577–1660), a prominent poet and politician who lived there since 14 July 1652.
A selection of these, Klagende Maeghden en andere liederen, was recorded in 2008 by the Utrecht ensemble Camerata Trajectina.
In 1651 he, together with Jacob Cats and Gerard Pietersz. Schaep, was sent to England to negotiate with the government of the Commonwealth about the renewal of a commercial treaty of 1496, the repeal of the first Navigation Act, and a number of other points of friction.
