A bowler from his early cricket days at St. Pat's School under the watchful eye of Jacob Harris and as a leading wicket taker for Karachi Goan Association, he was among the top slow left arm spin bowlers of Karachi at that time.
He also coached some brilliant cricketers like Wallis Mathias, Antao D'Souza, Khalid Wazir, Wasim Bari, Rashid Israr, all who ended up as Test cricketers for Pakistan.
When interviewed by the Dawn (newspaper), Permal attributed his success on the track to the support of his school coach Jacob Harris.
