4 unusual facts about Jacob P. Leese

Jacob P. Leese

In 1837 Leese married María Rosalia Vallejo, sister of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.

He married General Vallejo’s sister, moved to Sonoma, and acquired extensive land holdings.

Leese continued the business alone until 1841, when he sold out to the Hudson's Bay Company and transferred his business and residence to Sonoma.

During the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, Leese was taken prisoner with Vallejo and held captive at Sutter's Fort.

Jean Jacques Vioget

Vioget first arrived in San Francisco, then known as Yerba Buena, in 1837, when only two homes stood in the village - those of Jacob P. Leese and William A. Richardson.
