It is named after Jagadish Chandra Bhattacharyya, an Indian astronomer and director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.
Starting out in 2009 along the lines of Malayalam Idols, the chief judge of the show is Malayalam cinema actor Jagadish and accompanied by a panel of prominent personalities in the Malayalam cinema industry like Maniyanpilla Raju, Tini Tom, Kalpana (Malayalam actress) and many other pioneers from the Malayalam cinema industry as celebrity judges.
The educationist F. G. Pearce, Jagadish Chandra Mathur and Dr. Sachidanand Sinha played a vital role in making the plans for the Netarhat Residential School (or Netarhat Vidyalaya).
