Starting out in 2009 along the lines of Malayalam Idols, the chief judge of the show is Malayalam cinema actor Jagadish and accompanied by a panel of prominent personalities in the Malayalam cinema industry like Maniyanpilla Raju, Tini Tom, Kalpana (Malayalam actress) and many other pioneers from the Malayalam cinema industry as celebrity judges.
On February 5, 2003 it was renamed to Kalpana-1 by the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in memory of Kalpana Chawla—a NASA astronaut who perished in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

According to David Godman, Nisargadatta “would clench his fist, bang it on the floor and shout ‘Kalpana! Kalpana!’ which means ‘Concept! Concept!’ That would sometimes be the only answer the questioners would get. Maharaj was definitely not interested in massaging visitor’s concepts. He wanted people to drop them, not discuss them”.
