The municipality is bordered on the north by the municipalities of Tabasco and General Joaquin Amaro, on the east by the municipality of Calvillo, Aguascalientes, on the south by the municipalities of Jalpa and on the west by the municipality of Tlaltenango De Sanchez Roman.
It was first described in 1858 for an occurrence in the Leonora Mine, Jalpa, Zacatecas, Mexico and named for the locality.
In September 2010, Valero won his pro debut against Luis Delgado at the Palenque de la Feria in Jalpa, Zacatecas, Mexico.
To the north, it is bordered by the municipality of Tlaltenango de Sánchez Román, to the south by the municipality of Teúl de González Ortega, to the east by the municipalities of Jalpa and Apozol, to the west by the municipalities of Atolinga and Florencia de Benito Juárez as well as the state of Jalisco.
