In 1854, Benjamin Franklin Jones and James Laughlin became business partners and formed American Iron Workers.

James Laughlin

An important influence on Laughlin at the time was the Choate teacher and translator Dudley Fitts, who later provided Laughlin with introductions to prominent writers such as Gertrude Stein and Ezra Pound.

Mary Barnard

Barnard won several Yaddo residencies circa 1936 - 38; some of her first poetry was published during the years 1936 - 1940, in Five Young American Poets, published by New Directions Publishing founded by James Laughlin.

Dim Gray Bar Press

Subsequent works, handprinted in editions of usually 100 copies or less, included work by Martine Bellen, Wendell Berry, Eavan Boland, Guy Davenport, Sharon Dolin, Mark Doty, Jonathan Greene, Rachel Hadas, Andrew Hudgins, Jim Harrison, James Laughlin, William Matthews, Gerald Stern, Robert Stone, Charles Tomlinson, Jonathan Williams and William Carlos Williams.
