In 1997 he was part of a hand-selected cast for the Japan-Thai Contemporary Theatre Joint Production of Red Demon in a joint production of the Japan Foundation and the Setagaya Public Theatre.
There is a large concentration of cultural institutions within the CBD including: the Museum of Sydney, the State Library of New South Wales, the Customs House branch of the City of Sydney Library, the Theatre Royal, the City Recital Hall and the Japan Foundation.

In addition to his committee work at Chicago and Yale, McClellan served on the Board of the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), the American Advisory Committee of the Japan Foundation, the American Oriental Society, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the editorial board of the Journal of Japanese Studies, and visiting committees in East Asian studies at Harvard and Princeton.
Endo has received commissions to compose and tour new music from the American Composers Forum, the McKnight Foundation, The Children's Theatre Company, the Rockefeller Foundation (MAPP), the Japan Foundation, Continental Harmony, the Freeman Foundation, Hawai`i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, Stanford Lively Arts, and the Honolulu Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts.
In 2003/2004 he settled in Tokyo to conduct researches for the "Japan Foundation" in collaboration with the "Kyoto University", under the supervision of philosopher Akira Asada, on the theme of the 'reversed exoticism' in modern Japan'.
