Several places and institutions in Jacksonville are named for Ribault, such as Jean Ribault High School, the Ribault Club on Fort George Island, and a tributary of the Trout River, the Ribault River.

Eventually they came to the Port Royal Sound in present-day South Carolina, and Ribault elected to establish a settlement on Parris Island, one of the Sea Islands off the coast.

A French expedition, organized by Protestant leader Admiral Gaspard de Coligny and led by the French Explorer Jean Ribault, had landed at the site on the May River (now the St. Johns River) in February 1562, before moving north to Port Royal Sound.
New attempts were made to create a Huguenot colony in the New World, again at the instigation of Coligny, this time in Florida from 1562 to 1565, under Jean Ribault and René de Laudonnière.
