Aaron Moses ben Mordecai was one of the few cabalistic writers of East Prussia: author of a work, "Nishmat Shelomoh Mordecai" (The Soul of Solomon Mordecai; Johannisberg, 1852), so called in remembrance of his son, who died in early childhood.
Embracing more than 800 acres of foothill land in Yolo County at the eastern edge of the Sacramento Valley, the Orleans Vineyard was planted to Johannisberg Riesling, Zinfandel, Feher Szagos, Early Madeleine, Folle Blanche, Burger, West’s White Prolific (also known as French Colombard), and Black Burgundy grapes.
The Battle of Nauheim (also known as the Battle of the Johannisberg or Johannesberg) was a battle of the Seven Years' War fought near Bad Nauheim in the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel on 30 August 1762.
It was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, in honour of the Grande Chartreuse near Grenoble, and was known as Sankt Johannisberg or St. Johannes des Täufers Berg ("St John's Mount" or the "Mount of St. John the Baptist").
The first vintage released was in 1962 with a Trockenbeerenauslese Johannisberg Riesling made from botrytized grapes.
It and the others -- Altenburg, Dresden, Frohna, Johannisberg, Paitzdorf, and Seelitz—were all named by settlers for towns in the Saxony region of their native country.
