Béchervaise Island

It is one of several plotted as a part of "Flatøy" ("flat island") by Norwegian cartographers from air photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936–37, but was found to be a separate island by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions in 1954 and named for John Béchervaise, officer in charge at Mawson Station in 1955 and 1959.

Béchervaise wrote numerous articles in Walkabout, the Victorian Naturalist and elsewhere.

John Mayston Béchervaise OAM, MBE (11 May 1910 – 13 July 1998) was an Australian writer, photographer, artist, historian and explorer.

He served as field leader on Heard Island in 1953, leading an unsuccessful expedition to climb the 2745 m Mawson Peak of the Big Ben massif, the highest peak on Australian territory.
