Lawrence conducted Pacific bird surveys for Spencer Fullerton Baird and John Cassin, and the three men co-authored Birds of North America in 1860.
He is commemorated himself in the names of a number of birds from western North America, including the Cassin's Auklet, Cassin's Kingbird, Cassin's Vireo, Cassin's Sparrow, and Cassin's Finch.
The Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture was first described in 1845 by John Cassin.
