The unofficial flag of Lord Howe Island, which was designed by Sydney-based vexillologist John Vaughan, was first flown in November 1998.

Among his other credits, he is the national spokesperson for the Australian National Flag Association and was employed as an expert commentator by Channel 7 for the First Fleet re-enactment during the Australian Bicentenary in 1988.

On 29 November 2013, Vaughan was featured on the front page of a local newspaper The North Shore Times, with the announcement that as a result of his efforts, the terms vexillographer along with vexillography, which had first appeared in an interview with Vaughan carried by the same publication in 1976, will be included in subsequent editions of Australia's Macquarie Dictionary.
