Eventually narrowly beaten by John Conteh, Hemery then went onto the 1975 European contest where he was beaten again, this time by Ties Kruize.
He won the WBC Light Heavyweight crown in October 1974 by defeating Jorge Ahumada and held the title until 1977 when he was stripped for not going through with a mandated defence.
He lost to John Conteh in a bid to regain the European light-heavyweight title, and retired from boxing in 1974.
