On 23 April 2009, Minister for the Environment John Gormley announced that the electronic voting system was to be scrapped, by an as yet undetermined method, due to cost and the public's dissatisfaction with the current system.
On 6 March 2008, Gormley established a Referendum Commission for the first referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon.

As the new Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Gormley took over the responsibility for the decision to allow the excavation of national monuments near the historical site of the Hill of Tara to facilitate the construction of the M3 motorway.
In 2009 the organisation collaborated with a number of international development agencies including Development Fund of Norway and FARM-Africa to publish 'Climate Frontline - African Communities Adapting to Survive', which was launched in Dublin by Irish Environment Minister John Gormley, at the EU in Brussels, in London, and in several African capitals.
