Until the publication of the Memoirs Hervey was chiefly known as the object of savage satire on the part of Alexander Pope, in whose works he figured as Lord Fanny, Sporus, Adonis and Narcissus.
On 4 October 1779, he married Elizabeth Drummond (died 4 September 1818), the eldest daughter of Colin Drummond, of Megginch Castle, Perthshire, who was Commissary-General and Paymaster to the Forces in Canada.
She is the youngest daughter of the 6th Marquess of Bristol and his third wife Yvonne Marie Sutton, half-sister of the 7th Marquess of Bristol, and Lord Nicholas Hervey, both deceased, and sister of the 8th Marquess of Bristol and Lady Victoria Hervey.
He married Louisa Caroline Isabella, youngest daughter of John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol, on 23 September 1731.
In 1735, Alexander Pope wrote a satirical poem that mocked the courtier Lord Hervey, who had been accused of homosexuality a few years earlier.
