Agility Trains is consortium of Hitachi, John Laing, and Barclays Private Equity which has been awarded a contract to design, manufacture, and maintain a fleet of long-distance trains to replace Britain's InterCity 125 fleet as part of the Department for Transport's Intercity Express Programme.
It was completed by a Carillion-John Laing joint venture in October 1998 – the original plan would included widening between J3 and J4.
The series was produced by Auckland company South Pacific Pictures; a number of those who worked on the show would have a big hand in South Pacific Pictures hit Outrageous Fortune, including co-creator Rachel Lang, directors Mark Beesley and Simon Bennett, and producer John Laing.
His son Martin Laing became executive chairman of John Laing plc, but resigned in 2001 when the company faced major losses in its construction business, ending 152 years and six generations of family management.
