2 unusual facts about M40 motorway


Chalk Group

Well-known outcrops include the White Cliffs of Dover, the southern coastal cliffs of the Isle of Wight and the quarries and motorway cuttings at Blue Bell Hill, Kent, (which has been classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest) and at the Stokenchurch Gap on the Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire border where the M40 motorway cuts through the Aston Rowant NNR.

M40 motorway

It was completed by a Carillion-John Laing joint venture in October 1998 – the original plan would included widening between J3 and J4.


A404 road

After passing through the town centre, and crossing the A40, it changes to a dual carriageway up the hill to the M40 Junction 4, and continues as a dual carriageway past Marlow and Bisham.

Shrewley, Warwickshire

It has the Grand Union Canal, which passes through a tunnel and cutting which is a SSSI, London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill railway and M40 motorway all running parallel and in close proximity at the south-western end of Shrewley Common.

South Bucks

A large part of the district is sandwiched between the M40 and M4 motorways, both of which have junctions within the district.
