He had no children, and his titles were inherited by his younger brother, Christopher.
He died in July 1949, aged 67, and was succeeded in his titles by his son Charles, who later served as Governor-General of New Zealand.

On 1 August 1997 she married the 11th Viscount Cobham, owner of Hagley Hall in Worcestershire.
