The fifth baron was created Earl of Peterborough in 1628 and the title then passed to his son, the second earl, in 1644.
It was created in 1628 for John Mordaunt, 5th Baron Mordaunt (see Baron Mordaunt for earlier history of the family).
Howard married Mary Butler, daughter of John Butler (or Boteler) and Elizabeth Villiers, and had two sons, Thomas, 2nd Baron Howard of Escrick, who married Elizabeth Mordaunt, daughter of John Mordaunt, 1st Earl of Peterborough, and William Howard, 3rd Baron Howard of Escrick, notorious both as a rebel and as an informer and double agent.
By his wife Elizabeth, daughter of William Howard, 3rd Baron Howard of Effingham, he left two sons: Henry Mordaunt, 2nd Earl of Peterborough and John, afterwards Lord Mordaunt of Reigate and Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon; and a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Thomas, son and heir to Edward Howard, 1st Lord Howard of Escrick.
He was the eldest son of John Mordaunt, 1st Baron Mordaunt of Turvey by Elizabeth, the daughter and coheiress of Sir Henry Vere of Great Addington, Northamptonshire.
A plain tablet in the north chapel remembers William, infant son of John Mordaunt, 1st Earl of Peterborough who died in 1625.
Howard married Ann St John, daughter of John St John, 2nd Baron St John of Bletso, on 7 February 1597: they had one daughter, Elizabeth (1603–1671), who married John Mordaunt, 1st Earl of Peterborough.
