Following the first and second goals in Ghana's 2–0 victory over the Czech Republic on 17 June 2006, he celebrated by waving an Israeli flag, he also waved as the final whistle blew.

The footballer John Paintsil (sometimes spelled as Pantsil), who most recently played for English football sides Leicester City and Fulham FC, was born in Berekum.
He is a member of the Ghanaian Golden Era of footballers including Fulham right back John Paintsil and Chelsea versatile midfielder Michael Essien and former captain Steven Appiah who now plays for Italian Club Cesena and formerly Fenerbahçe SK and Juventus player.
He also ran academies in Ghana, Togo and Kenya and has been credited with discovering the talents of Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Asamoah Gyan, Derek Boateng, Kwadwo Asamoah, and John Paintsil.
