In March 1864, Lt. Col. Daniel Showalter joined the force under John Salmon Ford and led his regiment in fighting around Brownsville, Texas, to drive the Union troops out of South Texas.
He opened a medical practice in the east Texas town of San Augustine, where he practiced for eight years.
Neighbors led a combined military-Ranger force that included his personal friend John Salmon Ford.
