John White Alexander (1856–1951), American portrait painter and illustrator

James Waddell Alexander II

He was the only child of the American portrait painter John White Alexander and Elizabeth Alexander.

John White Alexander

In 1881 he returned to New York and speedily achieved great success in portraiture, numbering among his sitters Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Burroughs, Henry G. Marquand, R. A. L. Stevenson, and president McCosh of Princeton University.


Alice Pike Barney

In 1899 she began a salon at her rented home on the Avenue Victor Hugo; regular guests included the Symbolist painters Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer, John White Alexander, and Edmond Aman-Jean, and her art began to show a Symbolist influence.
