Munn was a Knight Commander in the Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, past Grand Prior of the Priory of Canada, Honorary Physician to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
In 1923, after the establishment of the Irish Free State, Sir John wrote to the President of the Council of the Irish Free State to start the process of breaking the Brigade away from the control of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of the St John of Jerusalem.
In 1962 he was the first non-Christian to be vested with The Order of Saint John of Jerusalem (Knights of Malta), for his spiritual and humanitarian mission.
