Olson's first TV announcing job was on the final year of the original Name That Tune in 1958; in that year Olson also announced the Merv Griffin-hosted Play Your Hunch, which lasted until 1963 and began his long association with Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions, five years earlier.
In the 1940s, Olson hosted a popular radio show in Chicago also titled Johnny Olson's Rumpus Room, an evening variety show running 10:30 pm to 12 midnight (CT).

Olson went on to become a famous announcer on American game shows, including as the announcer on The Price Is Right on CBS Television from 1972 until his death.
Neither host Bob Barker nor announcer Johnny Olson could keep from giggling when the incredulous contestant asked "What is that?" and later "It's a car?!" She did win it, and after enthusiastically hugging and kissing Barker, Barker quipped "If you want some affection, just give a lady a three-wheeled vehicle!" According to the show, the Zipper (the hardtop model) cost $3785.
