José Azueta Abad (Acapulco, Guerrero; May 2, 1895 – Veracruz, May 10, 1914), usually known as José Azueta, was a Mexican Navy cadet who became famous for his role in the United States occupation of Veracruz, where he was fatally wounded.

After the battle, U.S. Admiral Frank Friday Fletcher heard of Azueta's brave actions and sent word to him via messenger that he (Fletcher) wished to visit the fallen defender and pay his respects.
On May 1, 1914, during the invasion of Veracruz by the American Frank Friday Fletcher, Reyes Barreiro was among the surgeons attending to the noted Mexican hero José Azueta.
It was created on 23 December 1953 and named in honour of Lt. José Azueta, a hero of the 1914 United States occupation of Veracruz.
