In 2004–05 he netted four goals in 33 games, as Betis achieved qualification honours to the UEFA Champions League, while also winning the 2005 domestic cup.

With the Spanish national team, Juanito appeared in one World Cup and two European Championships, contributing to the conquest of Euro 2008.

He spent the bulk of his career with Betis, appearing in more than 300 official games and winning one Copa del Rey.
