A small number of vehicles are also produced in Brazil São Bernardo do Campo.
A unique "Karmann Hardtop" or "Notchback" 356B model was produced in 1961 and 1962.
The prototype body of the car was manufactured by Porsche's own Stuttgart Body Works with later versions (stabilized with torsion bars) coming from Karmann coachworks.
In 1949 Ford added a Taunus version with body panels fitted only as far back as the A-pillars, and several alternative body shapes became available, added by traditional coach-builders such as and Karmann of Osnabrück, Drauz of Heilbronn and Plasswilm in Cologne.
The cars were hand assembled and built entirely by Karmann Coachworks in Rheine, Germany.
The Karmann Ghia is also the subject of a secret pass phrase in the 2011 movie Cars 2.
