It has many long branches extending to the south and was formerly joined to the Kerch Peninsula by the Kerch Strait Bridge.
In 1944, it was joined to the Kerch Peninsula by the Kerch Strait Bridge, which was destroyed by the sea in the same year and replaced in 1955 by a ferry service.
