In 1750, the diocese was united with Kilmacduagh and in 1883 they were merged with Galway.

The Roman Catholic Church bishopric of Kilfenora continued as a separate title until 1750 when Pope Benedict XIV decreed that it to be united with the bishopric of Kilmacduagh.
The Bishop of Limerick, Killaloe and Ardfert or the Bishop of Limerick and Killaloe (Full title: Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert, Aghadoe, Killaloe, Kilfenora, Clonfert, Kilmacduagh and Emly) is the Church of Ireland Ordinary of the united Diocese of Limerick and Killaloe in the Province of Dublin.
He has also achieved a reputation as a literary critic: he has edited a book on Paul Durcan, The Kilfenora Teaboy (1997); The Penguin Book of Irish Fiction (1999); and has written The Modern Library: The 200 Best Novels in English since 1950 (1999), with Carmen Callil; a collection of essays, Love in a Dark Time: Gay Lives from Wilde to Almodóvar (2002); and a study on Lady Gregory, Lady Gregory's Toothbrush (2002).
He held a synod at Galway in 1523, attended by bishops of Kilmacduagh, Achonry Clonmacnoise, Kilfenora, Ross, in addition to representatives of the dioceses of Elphin, Killala and Armagh.
