The Auchenshuggle Bridge is the latest bridge to be built over the Clyde in the Auchenshuggle district of Glasgow, carrying the M74 motorway over the river en route to the M8 junction near the heavily congested Kingston Bridge.
Ironically, by this point, the migration of port facilities downstream to the deeper waters of the Firth of Clyde and improvements in engineering technology had allowed the consideration of bridges downstream of the city centre, namely the Kingston Bridge and, much further downstream than the Tunnel, the Erskine Bridge.
These projections of the Clyde Tunnel, Kingston Bridge and Erskine Bridge expand into aerial perspectives of the Firth of Clyde and Loch Lomond as Jim Kerr sings "higher and higher" while the camera 'takes off'.
The tower features prominently on the back cover of local band Deacon Blue’s debut album Raintown, on Oscar Marzaroli's atmospheric photo of the Kingston Bridge northern approach blasting through the city centre, with both Elmbank Gardens and the Mitchell Library both fully illuminated on either side of the busy motorway.
