In 1816, when the Kongsberg Silver Mines were reopened, Baumann was elected as a member of the board of directors.
Over the centuries scores of hugely productive silver mines have been dug in the area; one estimate (Wilson and Panczner) is that mines in the area have produced seven times as much silver as come from the famous silver mine of Kongsberg, Norway.
Recognizing it as silver and quite valuable, he melted it and brought it to the town of Skien in Telemark county to sell it.
