After graduating from the Kraków Academy, he was ordained a vicar and served under Archbishop Jan Łaski (the Elder), and later under the Bishop of Poznań, Jan Latalski.
Józef was member of many learned institutions, such as the Society of Friends of Science, Warsaw Scientific Society, the Wilno Academy, the Kraków Academy, the Royal Societies in Prague and Göttingen, the Imperial-Royal Society in Vienna, and a doctor honoris causa of the Jagiellonian University.
In 1883 he won the prize of the Kraków Academy in geometry, and later received Swedish Order of the Polar-Star, and Polish Commander Cross of the Republic of Poland (1924).
