Lääne County

By the 13th century the following major districts had developed in Estonia: Saaremaa (Osilia), Läänemaa (Rotalia or Maritima), Harjumaa (Harria), Rävala (Revalia), Virumaa (Vironia), Järvamaa (Jervia), Sakala (Saccala), and Ugandi (Ugaunia).

Silma Nature Reserve

A visitors' centre is located in Saare manor house, and throughout the nature reserve hiking trails and six birdwatching towers have been constructed.


Ants Laikmaa

1932 Laikmaa settled in the vicinity of Taebla in Lääne County, on his farm in Kadarpiku village designed with a 7-hectare park, where he remained and worked until the end of his life.

Kristjan Palusalu

Born in Varemurru village, Saulepi Parish, Lääne County (now Matsi village, Varbla Parish, Pärnu County), Palusalu is best remembered for winning two gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.
