In 1823 he entered the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied with the architects Pierre-Théodore Bienaimé (1765-1826) and Léon Vaudoyer (1803–1872).
In 1852 he was given responsibility for reconstructing the Sorbonne (unrealized), and also for designing the polychrome Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure in Marseilles.
The present cathedral, the "Nouvelle Major", was built on an enormous scale in Byzantine-Roman style from 1852 to 1896 on the site used for the cathedrals of Marseille since the fifth century, principally by the architects Léon Vaudoyer and Henri-Jacques Espérendieu (1829-1874).
