He was chairman of the Labour Club (1948–50), then chairman of the National Association of Labour Students in 1949–1950, and finally president of Glasgow University Union in 1951–52, and of the Scottish Union of Students, 1954–55.
Hattersley became chairman of the new club and later treasurer, and he went on to chair the National Association of Labour Student Organisations.

After graduating from Clare College, University of Cambridge, with a double first-class honours in Social and Political Sciences and a M.Phil from the Cambridge Institute of Criminology, Diamond was elected as the National Chair of Labour Students from May 1998 - April 1999.
Tumelty was re-elected on 28 March 2007 and served a full term until July 2008 when she was succeeded by Labour Students's Wes Streeting.
