The town is located on a back road between the market town of Batu Sangkar and Lake Singkarak.
The natural outlet for excess water is the Ombilin river which flows eastward to the Strait of Malacca.
The March 2007 Sumatra earthquakes were two earthquakes which hit near the northern end of Lake Singkarak in Sumatra, Indonesia, on March 6, 2007 within two hours of each other.
