This is one of very few sites for locating huge storage reservoir in India similar to Aswan Dam (4600 tmc) in Egypt, Lake Volta (4200 tmc) in Ghana and Three Gorges Dam (1350 tmc) in China.
In 1968, at the request of the Royal Society, Beament went to Ghana to advise that country's government on the effective utilization of Lake Volta.
The lake also attracts tourism, and tourist cruises visit the island of Dodi.

The pipeline was to carry refined products from Tema to Akosombo Port, where they will be transported across Lake Volta to northern regions.
