1984 World Series

Padre starter Mark Thurmond took a 2–1 lead into the fifth, but then surrendered a crucial two-out, two-run homer to Larry Herndon.

In the ninth, Willie Hernández closed out the series for the Tigers by getting Tony Gwynn to fly to Larry Herndon in left field for the final out.

During his first minor league season on the 1971 Gulf Coast League Cardinals, his fellow rookie and roommate was Randy Poffo, who would later go on to be known as wrestler Randy Savage.
