Although the airport has always been a turbo-prop aircraft airport, Pan Am announced, in 2002, intentions to install jet flights between Mayagüez and Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with Boeing 727s.
Also in the western direction are the tourist town Boca Chica (approx. 23 km) and the Las Américas International Airport (30 km).
They were stranded at Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo when they failed to board the Dominicana Airlines DC-9 that crashed in the Caribbean.
