In 1927, on his mother's death, Pyke was orphaned and he was adopted by Lawrence Adamson, the bachelor Headmaster of Wesley.

Lawrence William Adamson, the second, but only surviving son of Lawrence Adamson, HM's Seneschal of the Isle of Man and barrister-at-law, was born on 16 July 1829.
