It collects tracks from the band's singles and albums recorded for Cherry Red between 1981 and 1985, with two exceptions: "Dance of Deliverance" from guitarist Maurice Deebank's album, Inner Thought Zone; and "Index", a single recorded and released by leader Lawrence before the band formed properly.
According to them, their most significant influences are The Smiths and Morrissey, The Associates (the Mac in Eres PC eres Mac stands for their lead singer, Billy Mackenzie), Sparks, The Magnetic Fields, Saint Etienne, Pet Shop Boys and British eccentrics like Lawrence, Jarvis Cocker and Luke Haines.
Lawrence, Martin Duffy and Gary Ainge had moved to Brighton from Birmingham in 1988; but as Marco Thomas had remained in the Midlands, Robert Young from Primal Scream was invited to play bass on the recording.
The indie band Felt was formed in Water Orton in 1979 by local residents Lawrence Hayward and Maurice Deebank.
