Lawrence Murphy

Lawrence Gustave Murphy (1831 – October 20, 1878) was Irish, Union Army veteran, Grand Army of the Republic member, Republican Party leader, racketeer, Old West businessman and gunman, and a main instigator of the Lincoln County War.

Discharged in 1861, he ventured to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and enlisted in the Union Army, serving the duration of the Civil War.


Frank McNab

Drifting into Lincoln County from the Texas Panhandle in the mid-1870s, he soon signed on with John Tunstall, as his rivals, a group of cattlemen and cowboys from the Seven Rivers area of Lincoln County were allied with Lawrence Murphy and James Dolan.
