In 1982 it was revealed from the papers of former Bavarian state security chief Hans Langemann that Crozier was an attendant of Le Cercle and headed a secret international group that tried to influence the West German federal election of 1980 by using secret service connections and cover-up financial transactions in order to make Franz Josef Strauß Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The group's current chairman is Norman Lamont, former British Chancellor of the Exchequer.

At some point in the 1950s, Le Cercle was established by former French prime minister Antoine Pinay and French intelligence agent Jean Violet under the name Cercle Pinay.
