A baroque castle, Château du Champ-de-Bataille lies between the communes of Neubourg and Sainte-Opportune-du-Bosc, and in the Campagne du Neubourg, between the river Risle to the west and the river Iton to the east.
He was given by his father the modest lordship of Le Neubourg, in central Normandy, 12 km NE of his father's caput of Beaumont-le-Roger on the River Risle.
He gave the manor to his second son Henry de Beaumont (c.1048-1119), who was created 1st Earl of Warwick in 1088 and who adopted for himself and his descendants the surname "de Newburgh", the Anglicised adjectival form of his Norman lordship.

The name was Latinised to de Novo Burgo, meaning "from the new borough/town".

In the 11th century the manor of Le Neubourg was a subsidiary holding of Roger de Beaumont (d.1094), a principal adviser to William the Conqueror, and feudal lord of Beaumont-le-Roger situated 12 km to the SW.
He was overshadowed by his elder brother, but was granted by his father one of his lesser lordships in Normandy, the lordship of Le Neubourg, about 12 km NE of Beaumont-le-Roger, from which his own family adopted the surname Anglicised to "de Newburgh".
