Most, but not all, of the trail follows early 20th-century roadbeds of the former Manistee and Northeastern Railroad and Traverse City, Leelanau and Manistique, later reorganized as the Leelanau Transit Company.
This service ended when the land was sold for the construction of the Leelanau Trail.

Two of the stations built for the line survive at least in part, and the Sutton Bay depot, constructed in 1920, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1919, a successor company, the Leelanau Transit Company was organized to take over ownership of the tracks.
