Heinrich Wild (1877–1951) of Glarus, Switzerland, a leading designer of geodetic and astronomical instruments, began his career as an apprentice surveyor.
While the initial release of LPS (called "Leica Photogrammetry Suite 8.7") was in late 2003, it was a combination of new technology as well as software previously developed by ERDAS (which was acquired by Leica Geosystems in 2003).
There are three dominant manufacturers of machine control systems: Trimble Navigation Limited, Topcon Positioning Systems and Leica Geosystems.
