Leroy Burrell, former World Champion, World Record Holder, Olympic Silver Medalist in the 100 meters, and current track coach at the University of Houston, was raised in Lansdowne.
His younger sister Dawn also competed in track and field at the highest level.

On 19th May 1990, Burrell ran a wind-assisted 200 metres at College Station in a time of 19.61 seconds.
