In 1843, Captain Lord George Paulet illegally seized control of Hawaii without the permission of the British crown, burning all Hawaiian flags and appointing himself and three other British officials acting heads of state for the islands.
While serving on the Pacific Station he obtained a brief measure of infamy when he occupied the Hawaiian Islands for five months in 1843, in an incident known as the Paulet Affair.
Hearing that British Captain Lord George Paulet had seized the Kingdom of Hawaii, he sailed there and arrived July 22, 1843.
